Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight
I recently bought the new LEGO game LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. It follows the story of Bruce Wayne on his way to becoming Batman. The gameplay is exciting, and the story is very well written. Each level is similar to each of the Batman movies throughout the years. The first level taking him to Nanda Parbat to train with Ra's al Ghul, like in Batman Begins. But it brings back memories of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, starring Michael Keaton as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Jack Nicholson as Jack Napier/The Joker, who killed Thomas and Martha Wayne in Batman 1989. It uses different villains and stories from the different Batman movies throughout the years, making references to George Clooney's version in Batman and Robin. We get the origin of Robin but being told from Batman Forever with Val Kilmer and Chris O'Donnell. Ending the storyline with the villain being Bane from The Dark Knight Rises and seeing the ruins of Gotham, along with the final battle being against Talia al Ghul.
The open world of Gotham City outside of the main storyline was very nice to traverse with all the different challenges and puzzles to figure out. However, there is one thing that did stick out to this avid gamer and writer: when in co-op mode in the open world, you can only switch characters using the secondary player. One of the playable characters has to be Batman. So if you are playing with two people, only player two can become different characters, while player one must remain Batman, and that is one thing gamers pointed out as a negative. It did not take long to play and get 100% on the game. I was hoping to see in this that there be some minikits to find along the way in each level, and maybe some of the other playable characters include the villains too, with puzzles and challenges needing the tools and abilities of that specific character; for example, Nightwing. His birdarangs are electrified and are useful in collecting the Wayne Tech Caches, or Batgirl with her drone. It would have been nice to have more levels in there that brought in more characters like Damien Wayne's Robin. Or Tim Drake and Jason Todd, with the ability to collect their other suits like Red Robin and Red Hood.
It was a fun game to play and did present problem-solving skills, and the side missions like the Riddler puzzle rooms and Cluemaster Boxes, but other than those, it was overhyped even though the combat was similar to the Arkham games.
For those who want to buy this game, I do suggest it because it is a good way to challenge your mind like the other LEGO games, but it was a little boring and did not hold up to the hype we were all expecting.
